Community-Based Development

Since October 2012, the Lwengo Widows and Orphans Support Organization (LWOSO) has been working to address the educational, health, and poverty-related needs of families in Lwengo District.

From the beginning, LWOSO has taken a community-based approach to development. This means that the programs are designed and implemented with significant input from local community members, ensuring that the initiatives meet real needs and have lasting impact.

Local Leadership

LWOSO maintains a Board of Directors with elected members from Lwengo and surrounding areas, ensuring that decision-making remains rooted in the community.

Our Approach

  • Regular Engagement: Staff hold regular meetings with parents and guardians throughout the school year
  • Local Governance: A locally-based school board oversees Shepherd High School operations
  • Community Employment: Over 40 regional staff employed as teachers, nurses, office workers, cooks, security, and maintenance personnel
  • Student Service: Students participate in community projects including clean-up days at the local health clinic and tutoring programs

Community Involvement

Students actively participate in giving back to the community. They help with clean-up days at the local health clinic, distribute educational materials to primary students, and provide tutoring during school breaks.

This approach ensures that the benefits of LWOSO's programs extend beyond individual beneficiaries to strengthen the entire community.
