Supporting Women Entrepreneurs

In 2014, LWOSO launched a micro-credit initiative to assist widows in starting and growing small businesses, providing them with the tools and support needed for economic independence.

The program started with two groups of 7 women each and has grown significantly over the years. Before the pandemic suspension in 2020, over twelve micro-credit groups were assisting over 90 women. The groups resumed operations in 2022 and continue to thrive.

Program Impact

Over 100 women have benefited from the micro-credit program since its inception in 2014.

Business Activities

Women in the program operate diverse enterprises, including:

Pancake sales
Secondhand clothing shops
Canteens
Pig farming
Vegetable cultivation

Training & Support

The program provides comprehensive support beyond just financial assistance:

  • Business Training: Staff provide instruction on starting and managing businesses
  • Monthly Meetings: Groups meet regularly for peer support and knowledge sharing
  • English Literacy: Instruction to help women communicate in the business world
  • Peer Support: Women support each other through shared experiences and advice

Research Findings

A 2017 San Diego State University study found that participants reported they had improved their situation, learned about starting a business and managing money, and made friends through the program.
